A hand-held laser device which can remove toner from paper
We reported earlier this week on new toner technology from Toshiba which makes it possible to reuse a sheet of paper up to five times, lengthening the lifecycle of the paper and saving money. Now it has been announced by the University of Cambridge that they have developed a hand-held laser device which can remove toner from paper without causing “‘significant damage’”.
in the testing and development of this new tool, the Cambridge researchers worked with a team from the Bavarian Laser Center. The joint group tested 10 different setups of lasers at varying concentrations and time to find the one which worked best. After each test, the paper was examined for any signs of damage as well as being checked for remaining toner residue.
The scientists believe that if the ink is able to be removed rather than the paper be recycled, there could be a resulting drop in emissions by up to 20%. Consequently, if the paper is being re-used instead of new paper being made, there could be as much as “95% reduction of emission per ton of paper.”
